2004-2005 Girl's Season

2/23 Lancers Lose In Sudden Death  After battling back three times, the Lady Lancers finally were defeated this afternoon 11-10 by a very strong Peninsula team.  Three times the Lancers would battle back to take the lead and each time Peninsula would respond.  Trailing 5-2 at halftime, Sunny Hills used a frantic "foul and go" defense to catch Peninsula, tying the game 6-6 going into the fourth quarter.  The Lancers scored the first two goals of the fourth, only to have Peninsula score the next two, tying the game on an outside shot with :46 left in  the game.

In overtime, the Lancers again, took the lead, scoring twice after Peninsula had scored first, leading 10-9 going to the second overtime.  Once again, Peninsula scored with only 32 seconds remaining to send the game into "sudden victory," and then scored on their second possession to win the "epic battle."

The Lancers finish with 23 wins and only 5 loses.  CDM, Villa Park, Laguna Beach and Peninsula are the final four in division II.

2/04 Freeway League Champions! Sunny Hills Girl's Varsity Water Polo Wins 2nd Freeway League Championship!  With it's 11-5 victory over Fullerton Thursday, Sunny Hills clinched the League Championship.  With a record of 8-0 in league, (20-4 overall,) Sunny Hills enjoys a three game lead with only two to play.   Today, the Lancers had a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring twice each.

This league championship is the Lady Lancers 2nd.  Girl's Water Polo Started in the Freeway League with the 1999 season.  The other League Championship came during the 2001 season.  The Lancers are currently ranked 4th in Division II CIF and 9th in Orange County.

The Lancers know that their mission is still not complete.  A team goal of going 10-0 in league still leaves some business unfinished.  The Lancers play Buena Park at Sunny Hills on Tuesday and finish up league play against 2nd place La Habra on Thursday.

2/02 Seven Down, Three To Go. The Lancers took another step towards a Freeway League Crown by defeating Troy 14-8 on Tuesday.  The Lancers relied on outside shooting as Troy dropped on the Lancer 2 meter game.  Each game the Lancers have been able to answer.  Today it was perimeter shooting.  In a very physical game, in the end, it was the Lancer's ability to pass the ball deep, and rotate it back to the top that allowed the open shots to fall.

Fullerton defeated Buena Park 13-7, La Habra and Sonora will play today.

1/14/05 The Beat Goes On-In a Freeway League showdown of the only two undefeated teams, Sunny Hills defeated Fullerton 10-2 on Thursday.  Scoring first, Fullerton took a 1-0 lead into the 2nd quarter and then saw the Lancers score 7 straight goals over the next three quarters.  A slight defensive adjustment and some tremendous 2 meter defensive work by our Super Sophomores allowed Sunny Hills to throw a blanket over the Fullerton offense.

This game marked the best defensive effort for Sunny Hills yet in Freeway League play.  Fullerton, a contender for this year's league title did not have an answer for the defensive scheme.

Elsewhere in the Freeway League, La Habra defeated Troy in overtime 9-7 and Sonora beat Buena Park 20-7.

12/20/04 Lancers Rally To Defeat Temescal Canyon, Place 3rd In San Clemente Tournament. In one of the wildest comebacks in the history of Sunny Hill's Water Polo, the Lancers stormed back in the second half to defeat Temescal Canyon by a score of 10-6, allowing them to place third in the San Clemente Tournament.

Trailing 5-0 at half time, and 6-1 midway through the 3rd quarter, Sunny Hills scored nine straight goals to stun Temescal Canyon, and the crowd in a game that at one point seemed to be over.

Sunny Hills, started slowly, and while they had some chances to score, ball under calls and missed shots made the first half a disaster.  Starting the third quarter, the Lancers were able to upset Temescal Canyon's rhythm and it was all down hill from there.  Sunny Hills moves to 8-3 on the season and will play in the Newport Holiday Cup Tournament, this week.

Sunny Hill's opened it's girl's season with an impressive 10-9 victory over a very solid Brea Olinda on Tuesday.  In a back and forth battle that saw the Lancers show flashes of brilliant defense, Sunny Hills was able to grind out the tough victory.  Goal tending was a factor as both goalies made significant saves in preserving the victory.

Sunny Hills, playing it's first game of the season had a look of rust, being ejected 8 times and being a bit shakey on the six on five, but in the end, when the Lancers needed a stop, their signature tough defense found it's legs and the Lancers prevailed.
